Making Chemo Cap - Tips from the Trenches

Reprinted from Heritage Spinning & Weaving's weekly newsletter, 8/08.

Maureen has been talking about writing an article for us about making chemo caps
for months. Unfortunately, she's been going through a rough couple rounds of chemo
so hasn't had the energy or focus to put her thoughts down on paper. So, I thought I'd
help her out and do an interview instead.

Selecting materials for making
comfort items
Chemo Caps
Most 100% acrylic yarns and
some other yarns are too
scratchy for sensitive newly-bare
skin. Not all wool is too scratchy.
Many superwash merinos and
wool/nylon sock yarns are fine
for chemo caps. Chemo caps
need not be machine washable,
but it must be labeled as such.
Caps that are deemed to coarse
for cancer patients will be
forwarded to charities
supporting others in need.
Blankets and pillows
Polar fleece and polyfill are the
prefered materials for these
items. All edgings should be
made of 100% machine
washable yarn.
Bears
Machine washable yarn is
preferred, but not necessary.
Please stuff with polyfill. Label
appropriately.
Labeling
Because of allergies and to
ensure your item is properly
cared for, please label each
item contributed with care
instructions using the tags at
below (click on link for PDF). If
you cannot reproduce the tags,
please ensure that all the
information on the tag is
attached to the item.
